★☆★☆ GRETSCH G5422TDCG ELECTROMATIC HOLLOWBODY HOT ROD WALT 108
Welcome to my auction for a circa 1940 Gibson L-50 which I converted to a left-handed Gibson ES-150. This is a fine sounding guitar and should provide its' next owner many hours of enjoyment. I spent many years looking for a factory lefty ES-150, but to date I've only uncovered one converted righty.
This guitar can get you very close to the early electric archtop sound made famous by Charlie Christian. I looked for a guitar which wasn't pristine to convert and this one started life as an L-50, which has a 16" body, spruce top and curly maple back and sides. The headstock was has a vertical split on the right side which was reglued and added with two dowels. No retouching was done, and you can see the work - in the 10 years I've owned the guitar, I've had no problems with it. The back of the neck looks refinished as well.
The pictures tell the story of this guitar. The guitar has been well used over the last 70 years and has play wear, checking and dings. But it is all there and it delivers the ES-150 tone.
Here's what I did on the conversion:
- I added a Jason Lollar Charlie Christian pickup with the slotted B-string for a lefty.
- I swapped out the tuners for period correct Grover Sta-Tites.
- I had Cris Mirabella, a top archtop pickguard artist make a lefty pickguard and pickup cover with aged binding.
- I added replica ES-150 knobs from Gerry Beaudoin in England.
- I added the correct ES-150 trapeze tailpiece.
If you're looking for the Charlie Christian sound and you're a lefty, this guitar may be the one. It is set up to play - all you need is the EH-150 amp!
